Conroe grows trees faster than it grows subdivisions — and it grows subdivisions fast.
Conroe has added a third to its population since 2020, and nearly every one of those new lots was cut out of working pine forest. What’s left standing in the yard — loblolly pines pushing 80 feet, water oaks, sweetgums — grew up in a closed canopy and now stands alone against Gulf storm lines. That’s the tree work in this county: tall, heavy, and close to something expensive.
The clay doesn’t help. A saturated spring loosens root plates, an August drought cracks the ground open, and a pine that leaned two degrees last year leans eight this year. If a tree on your lot has started telegraphing — a new lean, dropped limbs, mushrooms at the base, a crown going thin — that’s the cheap moment to deal with it. The expensive moment involves a roof.
The Texas A&M Forest Service keeps good plain-language guides on hazard trees, and their oak wilt program is the reason we won’t prune your live oak in April no matter how nicely you ask. Honest answers are part of the estimate.

What does it cost to take a tree down here?
Typical range in Montgomery County is $200–$2,000. Small ornamentals sit at the bottom; a mature pine or oak with room to work runs $800–$1,500; tight access, deadwood overhead, or crane work pushes past that, and true emergencies can reach $5,000. The estimate is free, written, and per-tree.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Conroe?
On most residential lots, no — but some Conroe developments carry their own tree covenants, and HOAs around the lake can be particular. We flag it during the estimate if your tree is one of the exceptions.
Can you just trim it instead of removing it?
Often, yes — and we’ll say so. A thinned crown and clean roofline solves most “that tree scares me” conversations for a fraction of removal money. The exceptions are dead pines and cracked leaders: those only get worse.
